The Queens and Goddesses of Calypso
Pierced:
The Last Pharaoh, is the latest collection from the very young designer Luke
Azzopardi. He
showcased 29 looks for the A/W 2013 collection, perfectly tailored
with meticulous materials. Unfortunately I couldn’t be there as I’m living and
working in London, but my friends and the photographs I saw, assured me that is
was a beautiful and piercing affair.
The
collection was inspired by his roots of Calypso, Gozo, Maltese Heritage and the
1920's-30's Egyptian Revival. The collection was very coherent and it remained true to
Luke Azzopardi’s style, recognisable from afar and his imprint intact. His technique
of digital print was on the forefront, with silk dresses, golden head pieces,
and lace. Culottes and cropped lace tops, skirt suits, to sandals and voluminous
midi skirts, as well a tribute to the ‘Ghonnella’. A black cone bra in silk, reminded me of the
1990s whilst the 'Selene' emerald green silk suit would have been perfectly suited for Grace Kelly and the 'Jordan' gown would be a beautiful wedding dress. The
models’ hair was very romantic, adorned with headpieces, veils and wreaths, like
goddesses from the past.
Luke Azzopardi:
“The
Collection was inspired by the close relationship the modern age forged between
beauty, art, life and death. It explores the mutable nature of aesthetic models
of different epochs. The work in the clothes is intensely elaborate and
detailed and revolves around the digital manipulation of iconic images from the
20th century. This collection hopes to instill into its audiences a sense of
wonder to challenge arbitrarily conceived ideas about the fashion industry.”
Amy
Zahra is the model of the moment in Malta and was undeniably the model of the show;
her looks fit the collection like it was designed for her, and the Babylon
dress was impeccably painted upon her, this girl is strikingly beautiful.
My
favourite look was the Contemporary Ghonnella,
my style from head to toe, and the midnight blue silk bra was styled perfectly
with it, an excellent modern reinvention. The lace crop tops in red and black
are on my wish list.
As coherent as it was, it was the perfect balance between classic silhouettes with a modern contemporary approach. There is something for everyone.
Have a look at Luke’s collection.
